  • Belarus halved the entry threshold for purchasing shares of foreign companies

Alfa-Bank in Belarus halved the entry threshold for purchasing shares of foreign companies. Earlier it was a requirement to invest 10 thousand dollars and now this amount has decreased to 5 thousand dollars.

The bank highlights that Belarusians have become more active in investing in securities in foreign markets. Over the past two years, the amount of savings invested in Alfa-Bank trust management has increased fourfold.

"This type of savings investment began to gain special popularity after the reduction of interest rates on deposits although that mechanism was in demand earlier. People are looking for alternatives to depositing money as they want to diversify risks,” the representative of Alfa Bank explained.

Belarusians most often invest in shares of well-known IT corporations such as Apple, IBM, Google’s Alphabet, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, Netflix and Nvidia.

There is a growing interest in the relatively unpopular corporations such as Dropbox, Avalara and Arista Networks. Also, Belarusians also choose to invest in Chinese companies such as Alibaba, HUYA, iQiyi, Xiaomi, Bilibili and IRobot.

Coca-Cola and Nike securities are in demand outside the high-tech sector.

Trust management involves two scenarios. The first way is to invest money "by order”, when you can tell the bank which particular shares and bonds to buy. You can also invest "on trust”, when the portfolio for a client is formed by bank specialists. This option is suitable for those who do not have the financial skills to make decisions or do not have enough time for it. The trustee selects securities in portfolios with the yield of 5-8% per annum, depending on the strategy.

As noted in the bank, the current trend is the desire of Belarusians to buy shares "by order”. Since the beginning of the year 2018, the share of "independent investors” has grown from 30% to 40%, and their number has doubled.

Trust management emerged in Belarus in 2011, and now several of the "top ten” banks offer this service.
